Just a question for fun!

If you were able to change only 3 things in this country today to benefit not just yourself what would you do?

Okay:
First - I'd require that all elected officials make the median salary and benefits for the district they serve. That would include the President. Perhaps then people would fight to better the average guy and not always fight to save the top 1% from paying any more taxes.

Second - Education would be free. Period. Exclamation point. Up to the bachelors, after that you are on your own. And tenure would be out. If you can't prove you are improving minds, get another job.

Third - Public assistance would assist, not coddle. People would be required to work for the money and benefits they get. Hopefully, that would be incentive to just get a better job paying more if they are going to have to work anyway. And with education free, well, no reason to not take advantage.

It would just be a start but it would at least be a start. There's lots more I'd change but I went with realistic stuff. Obviously, provide health care, banish prejudice, erase hunger, etc. etc. would be great, but it would take more than a miracle to accomplish that.

I would change:
1. Pamela Anderson's clothes... personally. Bwahahaha

wait but more seriously:

1. I agree with Suzy. Welfare, oh wait, Public assistance and how it is handled. I would require all persons under 25 (barring those with mental/learning disabilities) to attend money management classes. Provide a daycare for the single parents which is run by others on public assistance so they can attend and not have to worry about any childcare problems holding them from attending. They should also be required to attend classes to further their education to help in finding a profession to make them non dependent.
2. I would like to see states provide auto insurance at a reasonable rate to drivers. States require insurance and insurance companies get away with sky high rates because it is required. If a state employee says you are good enough to drive, they should put their money where their mouth is. This would help in getting rid of those examiners passing the crappy drivers....and boy have I seen a lot of them.
3. hmmmm.... don't know a third one yet.....so I'll keep the Pam Anderson one in there.

Very funny. Pamela Anderson must look like Frankenstein's boob donor by now. How many times can you get stitches in the same place?

I would get rid of government grants for things that should be privately funded and use that money for national health insurance.
I would open up centers with apartments to the homeless and provide them with the training and help to get them back out on their own.
I would require prisoners to grow their own food and make their own clothing and such.

The 3 things I would change in this country to benefit not just myself is
1. Make Liddia the most wealthy person around.
2. Give Liddia whatever she wants for the rest of her life.
3. And allow the world to revolve around Liddia.

I think it's ok that peole other than family are checking in. Ist of all Liddia is insane, and better quit pretending to be me. 1st, nedical care for all. 2nd - Free education; 3rd - No political parties, just people running for office, and limited terms so people aren't in office for ever. Even the President can only serve 2 consecutive terms.

I am a huge fan of getting rid of the two party system, or anything else that resembles it. It's ridiculous to lump the majority of the country into two groups of beliefs. And to expect that anyone would fall 100% into either side all the time.

I agree with KSR....nedical care for all... I don't know what nedical is but it must be something neat?

1. Real Campaign finance reform This is the most important step in this a country of, for and by the people. Take care of this and your well on the way to taking care of most of the other problems in the country.

It would include include:

A. Public financing of campaigns! The cost of campaigns are astronomical and we end up paying for them in on way or another. There should be a strict limit on the amount a candidate can spend and a strict limit on how long campaigns last. Right now politicians spend most of their time and energy campaigning rather than doing the work they're elected to do. No more never ending campaigns.

B. Zero corporate donations! It used to be illegal for corporations to donate to politicians and it should be made illegal again. These amount to nothing more than legal bribes and are the main reason that the concerns of big business are the main concern of our elected officials rather than the concerns of the citizens.

C. Non-partisan redistricting of congressional districts! Right now districts are "jerrymandered" in such a way that it is next to impossible for a challenger to knock off an incumbant. Some districts look like weird amphibious creatures these days as they squiggle across a state.

Free TV Time to Candidates! Remember when tv stations used to put a little thing on the air every once in a while that said something about their license being up for renewel and if you have any complaints you should contact the FCC? That's because they occupy the "public airwaves". Or at least they're supposed to be public. Each station should be required to set aside a certain amount of time for candidate commercials and debates.

2. End corporate welfare
3. Universal Health Insurance

Okay, I want to comment some more on my other two but I hit the wrong button...so I'll expand on the rest a little bit later.

I didn't get to check for spelling and other stuff in the previous post cuz I accidentally hit the wrong button - so sorry about that. Here are the other two real quick.

2. End corporate welfare! If you think the measely amount of money going to people on public assistance is a drain, it pales in comparrison to the hundreds of billions going to subsidize big businesses. Small business creates more jobs and provides more revenue to the economy. Small businesses should get way more help to stay afloat and prosper then large corporations but right now it's the opposite, like big time, dude.

3. Universal Health Insurance! It's a sin that we're supposed to be the richest country in the world and yet we're the only industrialized nation that doesn't cover all of its citizens. Take care of this and you also eliminate most personal bankruptcys and mortgage foreclosures.

I agree with Unlce Gary, I think people spend way too much money campaigning. There are probably some very good canidates out there that aren't able get their name out enough because they don't have the same amount of money as others. I think supplying everyone with health care would be great, but I canada already has it and from what I heard it doesn't work very well. I have heard that because everyone has it and everyone is helped you have to wait months and months for simple tests. I don't know that it would work very well.

The Canadian system isn't perfect but I'll bet you that you wouldn't find one person there who would trade it for what we have. We need to come up with our own system that provides at least basic coverage to everyone. There are a lot of different systems to examine but the way we operate now is completely broken.

At 7:29 AM, Blogger Gary Brownlee said...

As a matter of fact not just Canada but EVERYBODY has universal health care but us - except for third world countries. In fact a lot of the money that we're sending over to Iraq covers....care to guess? Universal freaking health care for every Man, Woman and Child in FREAKING IRAQ!!!

Sorry to get so loud...but senior citizens in this country end up loosing the houses they've worked their whole lives for to pay their freaking hospital bills we have the industrial worlds worst infant mortality rate and we're paying for univeral healthcare for Iraq. What's wrong with this picture?

At 8:08 AM, Blogger Suzette said...

I agree. Universal health care doesn't mean that you can't still have private insurance. It just means that if you don't have private health insurance you do have something that will allow you to get reasonable care. And I don't think you get less quality just because everyone is treated. There have to be ways to keep people from abusing the system like they abuse the insurance provided on public assistance.
Also, if we quit letting everybody and their brother sue their doctor for ridiculous amounts of money every time something doesn't go their way we'd have more and better doctors willing to do their jobs.
